  1. Welcome to FileTyper 4.1.2!

  3. FileTyper is a small “drop box” program that you can use to quickly change types, creators, and Finder flags.

  5. Version 4.1.2 of FileTyper is distributed as shareware and costs $10. Upgrades for registered users of earlier versions are free.  See the documentation for details.

  11. If you are upgrading from version 4.1 or 4.1.1, the changes are minimal. You do not need to replace any files in the FileTyper Folder -- just replace the FileTyper and MakeAutoTyper applications, and the FileTyper Menu control panel.

  13. If you are upgrading from a version of FileTyper earlier than 4.1, see the 4.1.2 installation info document.

  15. Note that, starting with version 4.1.1, the FileTyper Folder may be located in the Preferences Folder, so you can move it to that location if you want, or you can leave it in the System Folder.

  19. The following changes have been made in version 4.1.2:

  21. • Put the “Use alias instead of original” item back in the Open… dialog. (It was taken out by mistake in version 4.1.1.)
  22. • Fixed a bug in the folder size calculator that sometimes caused FileTyper to search the “complete contents” when “immediate contents” was selected, if folder sizes were active.
  23. • Added the necessary resources to MakeAutoTyper to make sure the Standard File icons appear in color under System Update 3.0.

  27. The following changes were made in version 4.1.1:

  29. • Fixed a really stupid bug in MakeAutoTyper that sometimes caused crashes when quitting, if the help file was not installed.
  30. • The incompatibility between FileTyper Menu and SpeedyFinder, and the upcoming Aladdin Desktop Tools, has been fixed. (Thanks to Victor Tan for his help with this.) Version 4.1.1 or later of FileTyper Menu and version 1.5.9d or later of SpeedyFinder should work properly together.

  37. • I now (finally) have an e-mail address. You can contact me at dazuma@cco.caltech.edu with questions, comments, or problems. Note that responses may be delayed between mid-June and mid-September because I may not have Internet access for periods of time during those months.
  38. • I’ve found I’ve been unable to keep up with sending out the latest version of FileTyper on floppy disks, so this has been discontinued. I apologize for the inconvenience I may have caused some people.

  44. • I am currently porting the code to CodeWarrior C, and preparing a PPC native version.
  45. • A possible fix for the lingering problems with Super Boomerang.

  51. SO HOW CAN I USE FILETYPER?

  53. • Solve the mystery file! That darn file with the generic icon and “application not found” finally identified!
  54. • Burn your Hand-Off II!  Want to map your MacWrite 5.0 files to MacWrite II? Just drop them all onto FileTyper at once and change all their creators to “MWII” with a single click!
  55. • Don’t want casual users snooping into that folder full of private files? Drop it on FileTyper and set the “invisible” flag in seconds!
  56. • Ever wonder how people create those SimpleText documents with the newspaper icon (like this one) that can’t be edited? It’s simple!  Just drop it onto FileTyper and change the type from “TEXT” to “ttro”.
  57. • Want to lock fifty word processing files without having to “Get Info…” on every one? FileTyper will lock them all at once, faster than an Finder 7 window redraw!
